THE original population of HEREFORD cattle
One of the oldest breeds, the Hereford cattle originated in Hereford and was nurtured and developed by a small group of breeders in the mid 1700s. With no imported bloodlines the Original Hereford has remained a true mid-sized native animal and also has one of the milder temperaments in the cattle world, even the bulls are generally laid-back and easy to handle.
The Traditional Hereford will deliver outstanding feed conversion, finishing on grass alone to produce fine, quality, well marbled meat and it produces a good medium sized carcase with a low rate of input.
An additional advantage of having a medium sized animal is the reduction of land compaction, a distinct advantage for farmers with limited land as well, being a rare breed, ideal for those looking for grazers on their conservation land.
The cows are naturally maternal, easy calving and generally hold their body condition enabling them to rear strong calves that grow quickly and wean at good weight.
Bulls are keen to cover everything when in amongst the cows and have been proven to cover a whole herd of mature Holstein cows. Their strong bone structure and sound feet and legs allow them to work to a great age, and their natural thickness and conformation means that they can retain a comparatively high killing value at the end of their working life. By adding a Traditional Hereford Bull other breeds can improve their feed conversion and confirmation in just one generation.
Traditional Hereford sires also breed consistency. Their finishing stock will be fleshy and compact, and will convert grass well into quality meat.
